SUMMARY OF ROLE:
The Community Relations Director is the primary lead in growing and retaining membership by introducing businesses to the value of joining the organization and building strong relationships with current members to support retention efforts. This position is responsible for recruiting new chamber members, strengthening relationships with current members, cultivating relationships with new members, and increasing membership retention. Other key responsibilities include Event Hosting & Planning, Relocation Guide Ad Sales, Fundraising for the Chamber and working with Chamber Committees, the Board and Members.
Key responsibilities of this position: Working at and on all Chamber events throughout the year, this includes the Coast Guard Appreciation Dinner, COMFISH, Community Clean Up Day, CRABFEST, the Annual Meeting & Awards Dinner, Business After Hours, Ribbon Cuttings and any other Chamber Events & Functions. Regular ongoing job requirements include meeting and talking with members and potential members, daily email, in person and phone communications with members and the public; putting together the Relocation Guide, recording interviews for Chamber News & Views, voicing radio commercials and announcements, assisting with and/or creating the Chamber monthly newsletter, creating marketing materials, ads, social media posts, and writing ad copy to promote the chamber, members, events, membership, and encourages participation at all chamber events.
JOB DUTIES:
- Develops and fosters ongoing relationships with Chamber members through strong relationships and development of services. Visit current members to encourage member involvement and retention.
- Works to recruit new members, focusing on the business/organization's needs via phone calls, in-person meetings, door knocking, and utilizing a business recruitment list.
- Interact daily with current and prospective members in-person, via phone, Zoom, and email to consistently communicate the value of their membership investment.
- Works with the Executive Director to create and develop the collateral for the execution of the membership recruitment/retention tasks, including, but not limited to, introductory letters and programs for memberships and committee communication.
- Inputs all communications and data in CRM to ensure the system is accurate, that all information regarding join/drop reasons and ongoing communication are correctly recorded, and ensures that the information collected meets the needs of the Chamber team.
- Assist in organizing logistics and help with all chamber events in a way that produces maximum revenue and profit, attendance, and community involvement.
- Creates, contributes to, updates, and distributes marketing material for the Chamber. Including but not limited to the monthly newsletter, email blasts, member spotlights, social media posts, letters, signage, and flyers.
- Identifies opportunities for sponsorships and partnership opportunities.
- Attends and assists staff at chamber events, such as networking meetings and major events. Will require working an occasional evening, weekend, or holiday.
- Fundraising for the Chamber and Chamber Events.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- High School diploma, some college or college degree preferred.
- 2+ years of previous customer service and/or sales experience.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher), Adobe, and Social Media Platforms.
- Experience with the following is preferred but not required: Canva, Constant Contact, Cold Calling, Cool Edit Pro, Volunteer Committees, Zoom, Video Creation/Editing, Event Planning/Hosting, Word Press, and CRM software programs.
- The ideal candidate must be capable of interacting with Chamber staff, current chamber members, new prospects, City/State officials and community.
- Access to reliable transportation and a current Alaska Driver’s License.
- Professional phone skills are required. Must be professional during in-person meetings and email communications.

OFFICE & WORK HOURS:
Currently the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce office is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 AM – 4 PM. The actual hours that the Community Relations Director works will vary based on Chamber events and community needs such as Business After Hours, Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies, ComFish, Community Clean Up Day, Chamber Dinners, Forums, Debates, the Chamber's Annual Relocation Guide Publication, and CrabFest, there will be some evening hours and weekend hours required throughout the year.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Able to stand and walk for extended period of times.
- Able to carry up to 30 pounds or more.
- Able to stand, kneel, bend at knee, squat, and handle stairs throughout the day.
- Able to sit at a desk comfortably while working on a computer for extended periods of time.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
The salary range is $62,500-75,000 DOE. The Kodiak Chamber of Commerce offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, life insurance, Simple IRA contributions, sick leave, and vacation time.
