DISCOVER KODIAK, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
FULL TIME EXEMPT POSITION
REPORTS TO A NINE PERSON BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Discover Kodiak Board of Directors seeks an Executive Director to guide and lead its destination marketing efforts on behalf of the Kodiak Region.
DESCRIPTION
The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer for Discover Kodiak and is responsible for marketing strategy, budget development, management of the organization’s programs, staffing the visitor’s center, and supervising two full-time employees. The position serves as the public face of the organization and is responsible for maintaining relationships with members and other regional stakeholders.

Discover Kodiak encourages travel by the public to and throughout the Kodiak Island Borough and maintains a continuing interest in the well-being of visitors.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Plans, formulates, and recommends for the approval of the Board of Directors such policies, activities, services, and programs that further the objectives and goals for Discover Kodiak and assumes primary responsibility for implementing the same.

Advocates for Kodiak Region tourism at the local, state, and national levels of government.

Monitors trends in the visitor industry by staying active in the Alaska Tourism Industry Association.

Enhances Discover Kodiak’s role as a Destination Marketing and Management Organization (DMMO).

Annually meets with community stakeholders to align priorities and reports results to the Board. Makes annual plan adjustments, within budget categories, as needed.

Develops and presents an annual budget to the Board of Directors and administers the adopted budget for support of Discover Kodiak activities; directs the preparation of all financial documents and records; and reviews all available grant programs and pursues programs beneficial to Discover Kodiak activities.

Maintains effective relationships through personal contact with other organizations, both public and private, whose interests have an impact on the convention & visitor industry and the financing of Discover Kodiak functions.

Plans, supervises, and coordinates all newsletters, publications, and social media content.

Works with members and community stakeholders to ensure that the cruise ship schedule is shared and kept up to date. Advocates for Kodiak to be a preferred port call with cruise lines as applicable.

Attends all meetings of the Board of Directors and, if requested, assists with facilitating the meetings.

Provides accurate and current information to the Board regarding the status of all organization activities and programs and those federal, state, and local matters that may influence Discover Kodiak activities and programs; and prepares necessary records and reports regarding administrative and managerial activities.

Hires, trains, and supervises staff to carry out Discover Kodiak’s purpose and to provide for the organization’s day-to-day operation.

Directs the activities of fiscal services retained by the Discover Kodiak Board of Directors.

Plans, organizes, and executes events and fundraisers for Discover Kodiak, including the Annual Meeting of membership, Chocolate Lover’s Fling, and Adjust Your Altitude Hiking Challenge.

Executes such contracts or commitments as may be authorized by the bylaws or the Board of Directors and carries out any other duties as assigned.

Exercises discretionary powers as granted by the bylaws, the Board of Directors, and custom.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Discover Kodiak Board of Directors seeks a forward-thinking, dedicated professional. The ideal candidate will exhibit exceptional skills in communication, relationship-building, team management, event coordination, ethics, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of two years in the Alaska visitor industry, tourism, marketing, management, and publication development.
A track record of progressively responsible experience in the visitor/hospitality industry.
A bachelor’s degree in tourism/hospitality, business, management, marketing, or a related field OR equivalent professional experience.
Proficiency in core accounting principles, managing a budget, Microsoft Office, QuickBooks, Adobe Suite, and simple website design. Willingness to adapt to new technology systems.
Ability to create and implement engaging social media and marketing content to promote Discover Kodiak, Discover Kodiak’s events, and Discover Kodiak’s members.
Able to work with the Board of Directors, City and Borough officials, Discover Kodiak members, and business and community leaders.
DECISION-MAKING RESPONSIBILITY / AUTHORITY
Works independently with broad latitude to implement the goals of Discover Kodiak. Reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for implementing policies established by the Board. Makes recommendations and develops policies for Board consideration and approval. Represents the organization to the media, public, and local elected officials.
SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY
Supervises all organization staff directly or indirectly.
EXTERNAL VISIBILITY / CONTACT
Frequent contact with the public, government officials, Discover Kodiak members, and other business owners and executives, requiring a well-developed sense of tact, courtesy, and diplomacy.
WORKING CONDITIONS
General day-to-day activity in an office environment, with some activity required offsite in a variety of public settings.
COMPENSATION / BENEFITS
Salary $75,000–85,000 DOE. Retirement benefits available after a satisfactory six-month review.
