Clinical Informatics Specialist

The Clinical Informatics Specialist is responsible for activities which support the medical department with the use of the EHR functions, policies, systems, proposed implementations, ongoing optimization necessary to provide high-quality, cost effective health services and identified organization goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the organization’s mission and goals and quality standards. Incorporate KANA’s core values of Courtesy, Caring, Respect, Sharing, and Pride in all activities and decisions.
  • Uphold KANA’s Code of Ethics by conducting professional activities with honesty, integrity, respect, fairness, and good faith in a manner that reflects positively upon the organization.
  • Educate providers, nurses and clinical support staff and assist in problem solving to promote the implementation of optimal use of health care software within KANA.
  • Plan and design learning experiences and uses expertise in communities of practice, to deliver a variety of training interventions. 
  • Provide direct support to clinical staff and patient care teams to facilitate the introduction, acceptance, integration, and optimal use of the EHR applications in the clinic. 
  • Provide consultation, guidance and support to health care staff regarding EHR use and modifications through troubleshooting, coaching, and consulting, one-on-one support for providers, nursing staff and other members of the clinical team in gaining and maintaining competency in use of clinical information, technology and communication systems. 
  • Establish effective interpersonal relationships with all levels of healthcare personnel; promote an atmosphere that encourages enthusiasm and user participation in clinical computing. 
  • Analyze and document physician workflow and provide system tools for identified efficiencies. Maintain compliance with workflows, policies and procedures as well as other activities to support PCMH model of care and accreditation. 
  • Identify, assess, and troubleshoot application and equipment issues as they occur, owning the problems and seeing it through to full resolution. 
  • Demonstrate outstanding interpersonal communication skills and adult teaching techniques. 
  • Facilitate creation of training materials, assuming role of content expert. Develop and implement auditing and review processes to ensure project goals and objectives are met. 
  • Coordinate and provide competency/efficiency training for new and existing clinic staff and providers. 
  • Select, test, implement and evaluate new or modified health care application solutions, data structures and decision support mechanisms to support patients, health care professionals and their information management and human-computer interactions within KANA’s health care context. 
  • Relay relevant information from ANTHC trainings and conferences to appropriate medical staff for training and education purposes.  
  • Design and deliver targeted education and trainings for clinical staff. Audit proper documentation and use of the EHR, documents findings. Develop remediation plans as needed and generate reports for Health Administration. 
  • Collaborate with clinical decision support teams and stakeholders to ensure the development and implementation of consistent system standards. 
  • Act as a point of contact for clinicians as practice and workflow constraints are identified and related to system content and automation. 
  • Participate in workflow review and development to facilitate appropriate optimization of the EHR. Promote the use of evidence-based clinical practice and standardization across the system in workflow and application design. 
  • Represent KANA on the EHR Governance Committee, as well as participate in EHR workgroups, trainings (onsite and offsite), quality improvement initiatives and other requested activities.

Job Requirements:

Registered Nurse and/or Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information Technology preferred. Must have 2 years clinical applications and training experience utilizing electronic health record systems in the healthcare industry; three years’ experience in medical office with evidence of interest and knowledge of electronic health record software packages or in medical/clinical informatics; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have knowledge of or experience with practice management and electronic health record systems.  Must have knowledge of data analysis and reporting tools needed for health care applications and a knowledge of quality improvement concepts.

Works effectively with others and is able to organize workload, and maintain confidentiality. Must be able to work independently, exercise appropriate decision-making skills, and function effectively on a team. Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have intermediate knowledge of EHR clinical and reporting tools, population database and dashboard, and Spreadsheet software; advanced knowledge with using the Internet; should have excellent typing speed and accuracy. Ability to travel to remote communities by small plane.
